Chidimma Adetshina was crowned miss Universe Africa and Oceania on Saturday (Nov. 16) in Mexico.

Adetshina who is law student and model born and raised in South Africa represented her father’s country Nigeria in this year’s beauty pageant.

She withdrew from the ten finalists of Miss South Africa in August after facing xenophobic attacks on social media.

And three months later, she became the first runner-up to Miss Denmark who was crowned Miss Universe 2024.

Victoria Kjær Theilvig succeeds to Sheynnis Palacios, Miss Nicaragua.

It is the first time a Danish contestant has won Miss Universe.

Miss Mexico, Miss Thailand and Miss Venezuela were respectively ranked second, third and fourth runner-up.

The 73rd edition was a proud moment for Africa. For the first time ever, 18 contestants from the continent competed for the crown. The competition saw 125 countries participate.

Nigeria and India have pledged to strengthen ties between the two countries during a meeting at which they also agreed on more support for Global South nations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Abuja on Saturday, the first Indian premier to visit Nigeria in 17 years, following an invitation by President Bola Tinubu.

The two leaders spoke of a new chapter in their strategic partnerships in the areas of defence, energy, technology, trade, and development.

Gabon’s military rulers said the new constitution has been overwhelmingly approved in a referendum, according to provisional results published on Sunday.

Speaking on state television, the interior minister said  91.8 per cent of voters had said “yes” to the charter, with a turnout estimated at 53.5 per cent.

The junta in power, led by interim President Brice Oligui Nguema, has promised it will be a stepping stone in the transition to democratic rule, tentatively scheduled for the summer of 2025.

It also requires presidential candidates to be exclusively Gabonese, with at least one Gabon-born parent, and have a Gabonese spouse.

The draft, however, does not bar Nguema from running for the presidency, raising concerns for some commentators about the junta’s ambitions.

The final tally will be announced by the Constitutional Court.

Financing is at the forefront of COP29 in Baku, where many are hoping to reach an agreement that unlocks trillions of dollars to help less privileged nations cope with the impacts of climate change.

According to the UN, rising temperatures and sea levels, varying precipitation and more extreme weather patterns pose an increasing threat to the African continent.

African officials attending the summit are calling on wealthy nations, who pollute the most, to pay up for the environmental harm they have caused.

”He who pollutes should meet the cost of clean up over the environment, should meet the cost of mitigation it should meet the cost of adaptation in that proportion, because to pollute, people have made the money to pollute,” says Barirega Akankwasah, executive director of the Uganda National Environment Management Authority.

”You pollute through production and so there is a benefit to you who has polluted in it principles of environmental management, the costing of good design. The services must integrate the full cost of production, including the cost to the environment,” he added.

Akankwasah is hoping that any agreement made at this year’s COP will clearly outline finance plans for a damage fund, stating that, the deal should ”have fully operational loss and damage fund with clear criteria on how much and who contributes and the criteria for access and disbursement of these funds.”

Protesters gathered in Baku on Friday also demanding that polluting nations pay their fair share to help less privileged nations adapt to climate change. They also called for the phasing out of fossil fuels.

More than 1,700 coal, oil and gas lobbyists have been given access to COP29.

Senegal’s parliamentary elections this weekend will see former presidential rivals, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and ex-President Macky Sall, compete for control of the 165-seat National Assembly. This follows their showdown in the March 2024 presidential election.

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye dissolved parliament in September, citing opposition obstruction, and called for snap elections. Four major coalitions dominate the race, including the opposition Takku Wallu, backed by Sall.

Senegalese voters traditionally grant the president a parliamentary majority, but economic challenges like unemployment, inflation, and recent flooding have fueled discontent.

Former President Sall, now campaigning remotely from Morocco, accuses Faye’s administration of reversing his economic progress. In response, Faye’s government blames the opposition’s prior mismanagement and lack of parliamentary support for delays in delivering reforms.

Tensions have also flared during the campaign, with reports of harassment against Sonko’s supporters. Despite this, analysts suggest Faye’s Pastef party has a strong chance of securing a majority, given Sonko’s active engagement with voters nationwide.

The elections will determine whether Faye can implement his agenda or face continued opposition in parliament.

South Africa’s beauty beauty queen has withdrawn from the Miss Universe pageant citing concern over her health.

Mia Le Roux’s withdrawal means South Africa will not be represented at the 73rd Miss Universe competition taking place in Mexico on Saturday.

Le Roux was among 120 beauty queens vying for the crown. She was already in Mexico City and had participated in various events and rehearsals ahead of the finale.

In a statement, Le Roux said the decision to quit the race was challenging, and acknowledged the support of her fans.

“I am profoundly thankful for the unwavering support from South Africa during my time at Miss Universe”, she said.

Le Roux did not disclose the nature of the health problem.

The 28-year-old made history in August by becoming the first hearing-impaired woman to be crowned Miss South Africa in the pageant’s 66-year history.

Le Roux was diagnosed with profound hearing loss at the age of one and has an implant to help her perceive sound.

South Africa has an impressive track record at the Miss Universe pageant, winning the crown thrice in 1978, 2017 and 2019.

A French military task force with a festive name — “Champagne” — is wrapping up a mission that’s no party: training a whole new brigade of several thousand Ukrainian troops who will be joining the fight against Russia’s invasion armed with France-supplied tanks, artillery canons and other heavy weaponry.

The approaching return to Ukraine of the “Anne of Kyiv” brigade, after more than two months of intense military training in eastern and southern France, comes at another critical juncture in the almost three-year war.

Russian forces are driving westward in an effort to capture all of Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region.

The reelection of Donald Trump is also keeping Ukraine and its allies guessing about the impact he’ll have as U.S. president on the war’s future trajectory, following his campaign pledges to swiftly end the fighting and suggestions that Kyiv should cede territory to Moscow in return for peace.

When deployed, the French-trained and equipped brigade named after a Kyiv princess who became a queen of France could prove to be a formidable force on the battlefields.

It will eventually be made up of 4,500 troops, formed of infantry battalions, plus engineers, artillery teams and other specialists, French authorities have previously said.

The more than 2,000 soldiers who have been training in France are being put through final paces before their return to Ukraine.

The majority of them were recently mobilized and previously had just a few weeks of basic training before their arrival in France in September, the French military says.

The Ukrainian military is also training other troops for the brigade back in Ukraine, according to French authorities.

The French military dedicated around 1,500 of its own soldiers to the “Champagne” task force that has been teaching the Ukrainians how to fight effectively together and how to use and maintain their France-supplied weaponry.

The French military says the brigade’s arsenal will include 18 AMX 10 light tanks, 18 truck-mounted Caesar artillery pieces, 128 armored troop carriers, anti-tank and anti-aircraft missile systems, plus other weaponry and equipment.

With observation drones buzzing overhead and amid clouds of smoke and bursts of gunfire and explosions, the Ukrainian soldiers conducted exercises this week at a French military training camp, showing how they have learned to defend and storm a complex of trenches like those on the battlefronts in Ukraine.

The French military wouldn’t allow visiting journalists to interview the Ukrainians.

French officers involved in the training said the troops are now better prepared for combat that they’ll likely experience in months ahead.

Nigeria has inked a $1.2 billion deal with a Chinese firm to revitalize a gas processing facility, a move that officials say could propel the African country to a leading position in aluminium production.

The deal between the Chinese state-owned CNCEC and the BFI Group, a major investor in the Aluminum Smelter Company of Nigeria, is expected to revive the 135 million standard cubic feet gas processing facility plant at the smelter. Nigeria’s minister of state for gas announced it Tuesday via a post on the social platform X.

Minister of State for Gas Ekperikpe Ekpo expressed optimism about the “significant investment,” stating that it would position the smelter “back on the path to becoming a leading aluminium producer for both domestic and international markets.”

Nigeria and China’s economic relationship deepened in 2016, when the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari visited Chinese President Xi Jinping and signed several agreements. Since then, Chinese companies have been contracted to build railways and provide infrastructure in Africa’s most populous country.

Despite being a major oil producer in Africa, Nigeria has some of the world’s highest poverty and hunger levels.

President Bola Tinubu, who took office last year, initiated reforms to reduce government spending and attract foreign investment. However, the country continues to face economic challenges, including a 28-year high inflation rate. Its currency, the naira, is at record lows against the dollar.

Many Nigerians have taken to the streets in recent months to protest against the economic hardship caused by the reforms. In August, at least 20 protesters were shot dead and hundreds of others were arrested.

Mike Tyson wasn’t in the mood for talking in the final news conference before the 58-year-old former heavyweight champion faces YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.

Tyson had terse answers for all the questions Wednesday night, two nights before the fight against Paul, who is 31 years younger, at the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.

The issue of Tyson’s health didn’t come up in a small concert venue about 20 miles from AT&T Stadium. A bout originally scheduled for July 20 was postponed to Friday night after Tyson had to be treated for a stomach ulcer when he fell ill on a flight.

Tyson said in a documentary promoting the fight that he lost 26 pounds while recovering, but Nakisa Bidarian, co-founder with Paul of Most Valuable Promotions, said Tyson had been cleared medically for weeks.

Bidarian also said Tyson was going through the same regular medical checkups of any sanctioned pro fight in Texas.

Several states wouldn’t sanction the bout. Texas agreed to a fight that was eight rounds instead of 10 or 12, with two-minute rounds instead of three, and heavier gloves designed to lessen the power of punches.

“It’s cute,” Paul said of the terse Tyson. “I fear no man, so I want him to be that old savage Mike.”

Paul couldn’t even get Tyson to respond by wearing what the 27-year-old said was a “diamond-spiked ear cover.” It was Paul’s jab at Tyson over the Hall of Famer infamously biting the ear of Evander Holyfield in a 1997 fight.

Tyson did get briefly riled up when somebody asked twice what he would do if he lost. His last sanctioned bout was in 2005. Tyson fought Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition four years ago.

“I am not going to lose,” Tyson said, his voice rising the second time it was asked. “Did you hear what I said?”

Tyson was 50-6 with 44 knockouts before retiring 19 years ago. Paul is 10-1 with seven knockouts in less than five years as a pro, facing mostly mixed martial artists and journeymen boxers.

The fight is the first combat sports event to be streamed on Netflix. It will be available at no additional cost to the more than 280 million Netflix subscribers globally.
