The hotlines are insured against professional misconduct. The service is limited to telephone advice, although some hotlines provide short services such as verifying a document or writing a letter for the client`s signature. You can also, in appropriate circumstances, make recommendations for more comprehensive services.
Most hotlines are funded by congressional funds in the Older Americans Act, though some are backed by the Legal Services Corporation or state treasury funds. The only condition for eligibility is that the customer is over 60 years old. With the exception of the Pennsylvania and Florida Legal Hotline, telephone consultation is free, although there is sometimes a small fee ($20) for a short service or for a referral to a lawyer. The Pennsylvania hotline charges callers who have an annual income of more than $15,000 $3.00 per minute. The Florida Helpline is free for low-income callers (same level as above) in the Miami area and costs $15.00 per call to anyone over the age of 60 in the state. The hotlines are all not-for-profit organizations in the public interest. We are always looking for volunteer lawyers to advise and assist our callers over the phone. Volunteers work with employees who return calls to clients, provide legal advice regarding the client`s issue, send written information and, in some cases, provide additional services such as reviewing documents, appeals or letters to opponents, family members or other parties, and some negotiations.
