For our purposes, a “system” can be considered as a simple and operational definition. We are increasingly aware that no two people use the same communication or productivity tool for all tasks. Even online, where writing is our primary form of communication, we are able to add nuance to the way we select and type our words. We may use symbols, such as :) and EMPHASE and things like that to vary the weight of our comments. In case of emergency, we can always fall back on the phone! I once asked a person who regularly worked with a child I wanted to meet if that child was using the environment for communication purposes. I was told, “No. We are far beyond that! It was interesting to me, because as detailed as I may be, looking at the environment is still a powerful part of my communication system, as are natural gestures and a variety of other strategies. In developing effective communication and productivity systems, I think it`s important to remember that only in rare cases do we try to replace one modality with another. For me, it is more appropriate to extend what already works for a student with additional tools and strategies, and then give the student the opportunity to choose from the system the appropriate tools for the situation. Creative destruction is a capitalism that develops and renews itself over time through new technologies and innovations by replacing older technologies and innovations. Another reason why technology convergence is important from a consumer perspective is that it facilitates access to technology at a lower cost. This trend is sometimes referred to as the consumerization of information technology (IT). Less often, the current provisions of the IDEA concerning the responsibility of public education for the provision of technologies and support services to students with disabilities are taken into account.

Today, video cameras for consumers are almost non-existent. Most people record videos on their mobile devices. While they may eliminate the need to carry around a separate device — in this case, a video camera — they also offer superior video quality than was once available. Video cameras in the early 2000s typically had a maximum resolution of 480i (720 x 480) and often had low battery life. In contrast, a modern mobile device can record in 4K resolution. This is mainly due to the frequent technological changes we are experiencing in the twenty-first century. Although it is more commonly used today, the concept of technology has been present since the beginning of human civilization. While this is generally positive, it has also caused a lot of controversy between different factions about what constitutes a need and what technological support tools could best meet those needs. Shouldn`t all technologies be considered “assistive” because they help us do things that would be difficult or impossible in the time available without help?
