Legalism is formed “where it is only a matter of keeping God`s law as an end in itself.” Sproul points out that legalism separates obedience from God`s love and salvation. “The legalist focuses solely on obedience to bare rules and destroying the larger context of God`s love and salvation in which He gave His law in the first place. I`m not an SDA as such, nor can I speak for the person you spoke to and why they got angry – but I`ve heard some teachings about it and I can see that if Protestantism were to go to Sola Scriptura, they were obliged to keep the Sabbath – apparently at the Council of Trent this was emphasized by Catholics. Rome itself is very proud to point out that it is a document, the sign of their authority, that they are not bound by Scripture, but can change time and law in their agreement. Obviously, people may want to discuss certain passages, and that requires a lot of authentic truth-seeking. The basis, however, is that the Sabbath is not part of the ceremonial law, it is part of the Ten Commandments, and one can see from beginning to end in the Bible how precious the Sabbath is to God`s heart. Some Christians followed certain holy days, others did not (verse 5). Some Christians drank wine, others did not (v. 21). Sometimes legality and obedience are merged. I have always understood that legalism tries to please God by following a set of rules instead of obeying what God teaches us in His Word.

Question: Would the Pharisees be guilty of both the legalism of the rule (explicitly shown in the Gospels) and the legalism of salvation (perhaps implicitly in the Gospels among the Pharisees, but explicitly among the Galatian believers)? Second Temple Judaism was somewhat diverse, not monolithic. But would it be correct to say that all the different perspectives within Judaism had virtually the same definition of grace (i.e., the gift of grace is given only to those who deserve it)? And that the Pharisees, although they believed in God`s grace, defined it quite differently from what a Christian would do (cf. Rom 4:4, 5)? I have to be honest here. And maybe it`s because I`ve always grown up with evangelical types. But in my limited bubble, I always felt the opposite of sound. I very rarely hear that we talk about sin in the Church, unless it is the sign, let`s shock everyone and talk about pornography. And this allows us to be part of the “in” group and to consider others as part of the “out” group. “Biblically, judging is when you tell someone that their behavior is bad when they`re not really bad” – I have a real problem with that definition. For example, read I Corinthians 5 and tell me how this might fit. Biblically speaking, you don`t speak biblically. (21) The apostle found in many of them a discouraging neglect due to discord and incipient legalism.

I once had a discussion with a Seventh-day Adventist about the Sabbath. He insisted that it be practiced on Saturday and not Sunday, as contemporary Christians celebrate the Lord`s Day as a celebration of His resurrection. I asked him if he trusted God`s Word in such matters, and he said yes. As you mentioned earlier, I referred him to Romans 14 regarding days of worship, and I quote: “Paul was also very aware of this form of legalism.
